The Leaning Wall of Quarr Abbey
The Historic Wall at Quarr Abbey saved from collapse.
This 13th Century wall formed part of a corner of the boundary wall to the Quarr Abbey Ruins. It was felt that this section was particularly valuable and rebuilding it was not appropriate. The Decision was made to undertake a very challenging re-verticalisation exercise. The wall begun its inclination some 20 years ago and was propped using old railway sleepers. However by 2014, these were found to be suffering from extensive timber rot and the whole wall was again at serious risk of collapse. By using a proprietary propping system, a strategy was gradually developed that allowed the old props to remain in place until a new temporary system could be installed, that was devised to allow a gradual controlled push & repairs to straighten the wall.
